Mental health is really an important topic to understand. Like the health of all body parts, mental health carries a significance that could not be avoided. In this tense and epidemic era, most of the people are facing disastrous aspects causing a lot of disturbance to mental health.
To cope up with mental health issues, it is important to raise awareness and present solutions on regular basis. It is a natural condition that humans face every now and then. However, Almighty Allah does not leave us alone in this situation and he presents verses in the Holy Quran that motivate us to fight and get courage from them. Moreover, Prophetic teachings help us to get ultimate guidance in every life part and struggle.
What the Holy Quran reflects about Mental Health?
There are several verses that are revealed in the Holy Quran to give utter motivation to believers. Let us have a look at these verses.
‘And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.’
Quran [2:155]
We all face troubles and failure in our lives but what makes a difference is how we deal with them. It depends on us how we respond and turn our problem into a solution. Quran and Hadiths give us contentment that is felt in the heart. The sense of peace is the most precious thing we get through from the teaching of the Holy Quran and Hadiths.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and grief
Our last Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is the reason for the creation of the whole world but still, he (SAW) experienced several periods of grief. One of his great grief periods is called ‘the year of sorrow’. This is the year in which his wife Khadija (RA) and his uncle Abu Talib who were the pillar of support to him, passed away shortly after one another. Also, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) saw six of his children died before him in early childhood and some in adulthood. This caused him great pain and suffering.
So it is clear that when Allah gives a person some grief, he gives the power of patience and this patience is proof of your faith.
It is stated in the Holy Quran,
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…”
(Qur’an, 2:286)
The sorrows of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) mentioned in the Quran
‘Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow.’
Quran [18:6]
Allah also mentions in the Quran:
‘And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.’
Quran [18:6]
How the Quran and Sunnah help in boosting your mental health?
The Holy Quran is giving complete guidance to us. Even when we are distressed and demotivated, Quran and Sunnah come up with the words that offer reassurance at best.
‘O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.’
Quran [2:153]
Ibn Kathir writes:
‘It is a fact that the servant is either enjoying a bounty that he should be thankful for or suffering a calamity that he should meet with patience. Allah has stated that the best tools to help ease the effects of the afflictions are patience and prayer.’
One of the hadiths states:
Suhaib (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said:
“Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affairs are good and this is only for the believer. If something of good happens to him he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him he is patient and that is good for him.”
(Muslim)
Peace with the Remembrance of Allah
‘…Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.’
Quran [13:28]
The above verse is amazingly showing that every matter of a believer is for the good. Either one is in hardship or in ease, peace is achieved through prayers, zikar, and meditation.
‘…But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.’
Quran [8:30]
No matter what circumstances we are going through in our lives, we have to put our whole trust in Almighty Allah while trying our best to control things and resolve them.
‘Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.’
Quran [94:6]
No trouble lasts forever. Need is to analyze the situation and find the solution in the light of the Noble book, Holy Quran, and Sunnah. After every hardship, there comes ease and this thought will make you win the struggles of life.
