Hijab in Islam

Islam is an absolute religion that gives value, rights, as well as respect to human beings, especially women. The rights of women mentioned in Islam are unmatchable as no religion and culture define it well. Women’s status in Islam empowers her identity and gives her the freedom to conquer the world.

However, people are convinced of all the rights of women mentioned by Islam but when it comes to Hijab, they find the Hijab aspect the hardest one. Also, people find it difficult to convince others about Hijab in Islam. Most of the people still think Hijab as a sign of incursion that brings back women to the back era. This perception is absolutely wrong as Hijab in Islam is all meant to protect women from evil eyes of society and it is an avid symbol of respect for women.

Hijab in Islam

Meaning of Hijab in Islam

Hijab carries greater importance in Islam and highlighted in the Quran seven times. The Holy Quran refers to the exact meaning for Hijab as a curtain, separation, and wall. The literal meaning of the Hijab is anything that protects something.

The significance of Hijab in the Holy Quran

Almighty Allah speaks in the Holy Quran,

O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal… And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a separation (Hijab).” (Quran, 33: 53)

Hijab in Islam represents a protection and woman’s submission to Almighty and strengthens the connection and faith towards her Creator. Hijab is a religious obligation that women need to fulfill. When a woman is wearing a hijab or veil, she is close to Allah and submitting herself to Allah (SWT).

Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran:
“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves (part) of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Quran, 33:59)

When it comes to the dressing of women, there are two basic requirements that have to be filled. Firstly the woman should cover her body fully except her face, hands, and feet. Secondly, her clothing should be loose enough so that it can hide the shape of a woman’s body. Hijab highlights the identity of Muslim Women.

Dresscode for Women

In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty mentioned the women dress code in these words:

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers that you might succeed.” (Quran, 24:31)

In a few words, it can be said that Hijab in Islam is not a restriction for Muslim women but it is a strong identity for those who wear it. Such women beautify themselves through Hijab and get respect from society. It is due to the hijab in Islam that women remain free from disturbances and other negativities. So in short, being a Muslim woman, we should try to preach the aspect of Hijab and wear it to earn the blessings from Almighty Allah in this world and hereafter world.
