tasawwuf in Islam

Tasawwauf in Islam is the significant aspect one requires to understand the meaning of life.

Allah the Exalted says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Indeed that person has brought himself into happiness and success (falah) who purifies himself (tazakka).”
Quran 87:14

In the above verse, Allah said that through Tazkiyah, or inner purification, one can attain true success and pleasure for a Muslim.

tasawwuf

In Islam, the aspect of inner purification is known as Tasawwuf. This concept itself concerns with the curing and healing of hearts with spiritual afflictions. Tasawwuf in Islam is the name of obtaining the love and nearness of Almighty Allah.

The whole sacred knowledge reached us through an unbroken chain from our Noble Messenger (Muhammad PBUH) via his pious companions (sahabah) and the group of generations that followed these best personalities. They have attained whole inner purification and later passed on this blessed knowledge to pursuers of Tazkiyah.

Tasawwuf is an integral and harmonizing prospect to the sacred parameters of the Holy Qur’an, Sunnah, and Shariah. It is one of the branches of Islamic Sacred Knowledge and it is an obligation of Muslims to obtain Tazkiyah and the blessing of the nearness of Allah. Thus it becomes essential that we should seek out those blessed personalities of Islam who have attained this sacred knowledge and who can guide us towards the path of achieving real success.

Tasawwuf in Islam in the light of Holy Qur’an

Allah (SWT) mentions the purity of the heart and aspect of attaining Tasawwuf at several places in Qur’an.

Truly he succeeds that purifies it.

(Qur:an 91:9)

Tasawwuf is equal to purification.

But what could tell thee but that perchance he might Grow (in spiritual understanding)?
(Quran 83:3)

Tasawwuf is the name of studying spiritual knowledge.

O ye who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those charged with authority among you.

(Quran 4:59)

The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, But only he (will prosper) that brings to Allah a sound heart. (Quran 26:88–89)

Tazqia-Tul-Nafs (purification of the soul) is a way of Tariqat.

And the servants of (Allah) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say “Peace!”
(Quran 25:63)

The goal of Tasawwuf is to yield good manners and to serve humanity well.

(To the righteous soul will be said:) “O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! “Come back thou to thy Lord well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! “Enter thou, then among my Devotees! “Yea, enter thou my Heaven”!
(Quran 89:27–30)

Tasawwuf in Islam in the light of Hadith

Allah Most High says: “He who is hostile to a friend of Mine I declare war against. My slave approaches Me with nothing more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him, and My slave keeps drawing nearer to Me with voluntary works until I love him. And when I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he seizes, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks me, I will surely give to him, and if he seeks refuge in Me, I will surely protect him”
(Fath al-Bari, 11.340–41, hadith 6502)

Another Hadith mentions:

“Truly, Allah does not look at your outward forms and wealth, but rather at your hearts and your works”

(Sahih Muslim, 4.1389: hadith 2564).

The purity of soul and heart is what teaches us to go on the right path. Without having these elements in life, our life will seem hollow and we could not find the nearness with Allah (SWT). At every stage of life, we seek out divine love that brings the light of hope and prosperity.
