hypocrisy in Islam

Hypocrisy in Islam is not just known as a trait but it is an illness that destroys a person at most. Hypocrisy (Nifaq) is described as an outward display of Islam however the person is inwardly concealing kufr(disbelief)’.

Hypocrisy in Islam was found back in the era of our Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It was the time when Islam was first recognized as a religion and at that time, hypocrites were called Munafiqun. Through their acts, they were involved in weakening the Muslim community and put a threat to Islam from the inside.

The Holy Quran’s warning against hypocrisy:

At most of places, the Holy Quran gives warning to hypocrites and informing about the punishment that would be given in hell.

“Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them.
[Al-Nisaa’ 4:145]

When the Hypocrites come to thee, they say, “We bear witness that thou art indeed the Messenger of Allah.” Yea, Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His Messenger and Allah beareth witness that the Hypocrites are indeed liars.
(Surah Al-Munafiqun, 1)

What ye suffered on the day the two armies Met, was with the leave of Allah, in order that He might test the believers.
(Surah Al-Imran, 166)

And the Hypocrites also. These were told: “Come, fight in the way of Allah, or (at least) drive (The foe from your city).” They said: “Had we known how to fight, we should certainly have followed you.” They were that day nearer to Unbelief than to Faith, saying with their lips what was not in their hearts but Allah hath full knowledge of all they conceal.
(Surah Al-Imran, 167)

And there are those who put up a mosque by way of mischief and infidelity – to disunite the Believers – and in preparation for one who warred against Allah and His Messenger aforetime. They will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but good; But Allah doth declare that they are certainly liars.
(Surah At-Tawba, 107)

Hypocrisy in Islam in the light of Hadiths:

Ibn Umar reported Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying: The similitude of a hypocrite is that of a sheep which roams aimlessly between two flocks. She goes to one at one time and to the other at another time.
(Muslim, Book 38, Number 6696)

Jabir reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) came back from a journey and as he was near Medina, there was such a violent gale that the mountain seemed to be pressed. Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: This wind has perhaps been made to blow for the death of a hypocrite, and as he reached Medina a notorious hypocrite from amongst the hypocrites had died.
(Muslim, Book 38, Number 6694)

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, “Among the signs of a hypocrite are three, even if he fasts and prays and claims to be a Muslim: when he speaks he lies, when he gives a promise he breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays.

Shahih Bukhari 33, Shhih Muslim 59

These are the aspects of hypocrisy in Islam as highlighted in the Quran and Hadiths. In our lives, we have to be aware of such people and ask Almighty Allah to make us travel on the right path till our last breath.
