Muharram is one of the sacred months in the Islamic calendar and the importance of Muharram is mentioned in the Quran and Hadiths. However, there are people who are not aware of the sacredness and importance of this month.
Muharram is the first month of our Islamic calendar and it is not only significant due to the incident of Karbala but there are also other reasons for its importance. The Holy Quran and hadiths both put light on the importance of this month and the day of Ashura.
Importance of Muharram in the light of the Holy Quran
The importance of Muharram is mentioned in Surah Taubh
“Total number of months in the sight of Allah are 12. According to HIM, the day on which HE created the heavens and the earth and of them 4 are sacred: that is the right religion. So, don’t wrong yourself.”
Importance of Muharram in the light of Hadiths
From different Hadiths, it has been extracted that the best fasting after Ramadaan is fasting in the month of Muharram.
Hadith 1
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is prayer at night.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 1163)
Hadith 2
Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) reported that, “When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) reached Medina, he found the Jews fasting the Day of ‘Ashura, so he asked them, ‘What is this day you are fasting?’ They said, ‘This is a tremendous day. Allah saved Musa and his people on this day and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Musa fasted it out of thanks, so we fast it too.’ The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said, ‘And we are more deserving of Musa than you are.’ So he fasted this day, and ordered that it be fasted.”
[Bukhari (2004) and Muslim (1130)]
Hadith 3
It has been reported in the Sahih of Imam Muslim (Allah have mercy on him), also from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) that, “When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) fasted the Day of `Ashura and ordered his companions to fast it, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! This is a day that the Jews and Christians venerate.’ So the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said, ‘When next year comes if Allah wills we will fast the Ninth [of Muharram with it].’ But the next year did not come before the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) passed away.”
[Muslim (1134), Abu Dawud (2445)]
