Unity in Islam

Muslims are directed to work together and follow the principles of unity in Islam. Our religion shows us significant directions through the Holy Quran to lead a prosperous life and reflects how we are greatly bonded by means of the common ideology of unity in Islam.

Here are some of the verses of the Holy Quran highlighting the aspect of unity in Islam at the best.

The Holy Quran and Unity in Islam

إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ

The Believers are but a single Brotherhood [Yusuf Ali]

The foundation of Islam revolves around unity and the Noble book of the Holy Quran and Sunnah ask Muslims to do their part for the unity of the whole Muslim Ummah.

The Quran says that:

وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّـهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا

And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e. this Quran), and be not divided among yourselves.

unity in Islam

Another verse states:

As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: their affair is with God. He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did.

(6:159)

And be not ye among Mushrikeen (those who join gods with God), – i.e., those who split up their Religion, and become Sects, – each party rejoicing in that which is with itself!

(30:31-32)

At different stages when we go through the Holy Quran, we find several verses where Muslims are asked to be merciful to each other and serve with kindness.

As per the verse:

Muslims are required to be merciful towards each other.
(48:29)

Unity in Islam and Hadith

Also, there is a Hadith that tells us “The Muslim Ummah is like one body. If the eye is in pain then the whole body is in pain and if the head is in pain then the whole body is in pain”

(Hadith).

However, we as Muslims are enjoying our materialistic and comfortable life instead of feeling the pain and misery of our Muslim brothers.

Do not Create Differences

Qur’an says that those who create differences in the Deen (Islam) are among the Mushrikun:

“Be not among the Mushrikun i.e., those who create differences in Deen (Isalm) and become sects. Each (sectarian) party quite content with itself (that it is following the correct path).”
(30:32)

“And those who create division in Deen (Islam) and become divided into sects, O Prophet (PBUH)! You have no part in them in the least.” (6:159)

The Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said:

“Anyone who gets even one foot away from the Ummah has taken out the Islamic yoke from his neck, even if he prays and fasts.”

This is the reason Qur’an orders Muslims to remain united and hold the rope of Allah steadfastly (i.e. Qur’an) and gives a warning to not create any divisions amongst themselves.
(3:103)

Qur’an says:

“O mankind! There has come to you a guidance from your Lord and a cure for the disease in your hearts.”
(10:57)

According to the Holy Qur’an, we should cure all our diseases of hearts through this Noble book and find peace in lives.

Unity in Islam holds great importance and we have tried to present the whole concept of it through the Holy Quran and Hadiths. May we understand all the messages of the Holy Quran well and lead to the path of unity.
