The mercy of Allah is infinite and this is an aspect that keeps us going in our lives. No matter, how far we go doing our sins, Allah forgives our sins and blesses us with His mercy. In our lives, the need is to understand Allah’s mercy so that we can love Allah even more and more.
Let us take a look at Quranic verses that lend a great emphasis on the mercy of Allah and His forgiveness.
The Mercy of Allah in the light of the Holy Quran
Say “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves (by sinning), do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful”
Surah Az-Zumar 39:53
This ayah 53 of Surah Az-Zumar reflects the infinite magnitude of the mercy of Allah. Even we have sinned equal to the weight of mountains, Allah (SWT) accepts our sincere repentance and showers his blessings on us. In this ayah, Allah SWT is addressing His all servants, not just pious and good Muslims. He is speaking to everyone ‘Who have transgressed against themselves (by sinning)’. Obviously, we are human beings and we have sinned major, minor, knowingly, or unknowingly. Thus, it is always better to present your heart to the Almighty and repent with a sincere heart.
Allah (SWT) says ‘do not despair of the mercy of Allah’.
So, it doesn’t matter how big or small your sin is or how many times you have sinned, Allah SWT is all, ‘the Forgiving, the Merciful’ and he always assures you that He will forgive you.
The mercy of Allah in the light of Hadith
There is a narration that beautifully explains how merciful God is.
Umar ibn Khattab RA reported that some prisoners of war were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and there was a breastfeeding woman among them. Whenever she found a child amongst the prisoners, she would take the child to her chest and nurse it. The Prophet ﷺ said to us: ‘Do you think this woman would throw her child in the fire?’
We said, ‘No, not if she was able to stop it.’ The Prophet ﷺ said ‘Allah SWT is more merciful to his servants than a mother is to her child.’-Sahih Al-Bukhari
Du’a to seek forgiveness
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu annee
“O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me” or “O Allah, You are Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me.”
Allah’s name reflects the Mercy of Allah
Two names of Allah (SWT) are al-Ghaffar (The Oft-Forgiving) and al-Ghafur (The All Forgiving). Al-Ghaffar means to cover and conceal. It means that Allah SWT covers us by hiding his sins and not taking him to account for them.
It is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
‘Allah- Blessed and Exalted is He!- says ‘O son of Adam! So long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam! Were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! Were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me having ascribed no partner to Me, I would bring you a similar amount of forgiveness.’
Sunan Al-Tirmidhi
Another verse states:
‘Let him pardon and forgive, would you not love that Allah forgives you? Indeed Allah is all-Forgiving, Merciful’
Surah an-Noor 24:22
The aspect of Allah’s mercy is visible in the words of Rumi as well.
Come, come whoever you are
Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving
It doesn’t matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair
Come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times
Come, yet again, come, come
-Rumi
Saying all, it could be summarized that we should have to repent with our every breath so that we get to please Almighty Allah. May Allah guide us at best!
