Sha’ban is one of the sacred and meritorious months in which we are said to perform nawafil prayers and do fasting. There are different instructions mentioned in sources that guide us to perform ibadah in Shaban. The authentic hadiths mention that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to fast frequently in the month of Shaban. However, fasts are not obligatory this month and these fasts can be done as per the strength of the person.
Ibadah in Shaban as mentioned in Hadiths
- The blessed companion Anas (RA) reported that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked, “Which fast is the most meritorious after the fasts of Ramadan?” He replied, “Fasts of Shaban in honor of Ramadan.”
- One of the blessed companions of our Prophet, Usama ibn Zaid (RA) reported that he asked Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): “Messenger of Allah, I have seen you fasting in the month of Sha’ban so frequently that I have never seen you fasting in any other month.” Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) replied: “That (Sha’ban) is a month between Rajab and Ramadan which is neglected by many people. And it is a month in which an account of the deeds (of human beings) is presented before the Lord of the universe, so I wish that my deeds be presented at a time when I am in a state of fasting.”
- Aishah (RA) said, “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to fast the whole of Sha’ban. I said to him, ‘Messenger of Allah, is Sha’ban your most favorite month for fasting?’ He said, ‘In this month Allah prescribes the list of the persons dying this year. Therefore, I like that my death comes when I am in a state of fasting.”
- Umm Salamah (RA) said: “I have never seen the Messenger of Allah fasting for two months continuously except in the months of Sha’ban and Ramadan.”
Above Hadiths mention the significance of fasting in the month of Shaban and these fasts are giving a boost to our Ibadah in Shaban. However, there is the 15th night of Shaban that we observe as Laylat ul Barat and throughout the night, we should have to focus on performing Ibadah with all our concentration.
Ibadah to perform on 15th Shaban Night
To get the most benefit out of this sacred night of Bara’ah, we should remain awake as much as we are able to perform ibadah in Shaban night. We should spend the whole night in worship and prayers. Here are some of the acts of worship given below.
Perform Nawafil
Perform Salah (nawafil)as it is the most preferable act to do on this sacred night. There are not any particular numbers mentioned for Rakats but it is better that these Rakats should not be less than eight. It is suggested to recite longer Surah in nawafil if remembered well. However, if there is a difficulty or the person is not remembering long Surahs then recite several short Surah in the nawafil.
Do Tilawa
Do the recitation of the Holy Qur’an as it is another form of worship and greatly beneficial to reap a lot of rewards. Once you have performed Salah or at any time, recite Holy Quran as much as you can.
Perform Dhikr
Along with the nawafil and the Holy Quran recitation, perform dhikr(recitation of the name of Allah along with other tasbeeh) on this night. Also, recite durood on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as many times as you can. This Dhikr can be done anytime either while working, walking, or in leisure.
Make Dua
It is one of the golden chances to get the blessings out of this night. It is mentioned that on this night, our prayers are accepted by our Lord. So ask Him from your whole heart and let your affairs leave to Almighty as He hears even the silent whisper of our heart. Our prayers strengthen our relationship with Allah, so make sure to perform Ibadan in Shaban and in other months to please Almighty Allah and get the best rewards for your deeds.
Shaban is about to come, so we should have to prepare to perform Ibadah in Shaban and make our connection strongest with Almighty Allah. May we become successful in pleasing our Lord and get the higher rank in Jannah. Aameen.
