Safar misconceptions

Safar ul Muzaffar is the second month of the Lunar/Islamic calendar. But there are several Safar misconceptions that roam around in different countries and people. Several misconceptions include bad lucks and omens that land on earth this month according to false perceptions of people.

Safar misconceptions

However, interestingly, people also come with self-made solutions to cope up with these omens like not arranging a marriage this month, make 313 balls and throw it in a river to avoid all bad lucks, boil chickpeas and distribute it to others so that these omens pass to others. There are also false assumptions that this Safar month is hard for the dead while the 13th of this month is usually mentioned as ‘tairah teezi’ to be unfortunate.

What does the Holy Quran say about Safar misconceptions?

Superstitions and false beliefs carry no basis in Islam. No day or month is mentioned as unlucky in Islam. Allah (SWT) has made days and nights to create the calendar of months and years.

In the Holy Quran, it is mentioned as:

“And We have appointed the night and the day as two signs. Then, We have obliterated the sign of the night (with darkness) while We have made the sign of the day illuminating, that you may seek bounty from your Lord and that you may know the number of the years and the reckoning. And We have explained everything (in detail) with a full explanation.”
(Al Isra 17:12)

The Holy Quran tells us the purpose of the different stages of the moon that rightly marks the beginning and end of the month and then it leads to complete twelve months of the year. Allah (SWT) says:

“They ask you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ) about the new moons. Say: These are signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind and for the pilgrimage.”
(Al Baqarah 2:189)

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the Earth;”
(At Tawbah 9: 36)

“And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open.”
(Al Isra 17:13)

It is observed that human blames other people when something goes wrong against their will but Allah (SWT) clearly stated in the Holy Quran that human’s bad luck or omen is the resultant of his own bad deeds or wrongdoings. So it is better to do your work in the right direction instead of blaming things, persons, or objects as unlucky.

Allah (SWT) further says in the Quran,
“What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself”
(An-Nisa 4:79)

Revolution of day and night in the light of Hadith

All days and nights belong to Almighty Allah and the revolution of day and night comprises of moments and these days and nights create months and then months create years.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) mentioned that Allah (SWT) has said,
“ The son of Adam hurts me for he abuses Time though I am Time: in My Hands are all things, and I cause the revolution of day and night.”

(Shahih Bukhari, Hadith no. 4826)

From the above Hadith, it is mentioned that each day and night is the creation of Almighty Allah. So considering any time, hour, day, month, or year as unlucky is a great misconception and also a sin.
