Being a Muslim, we all are obliged to pray five times a day but often we do not find khushoo in our prayers. Salah is one of the significant pillars of Islam, and the khushoo in prayer is compulsory by shariah. Iblees is the enemy of Allah, promised to mislead and attract the sons of Adam and it has been mentioned in Al-Qur’an:
“Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left…”
[Al-A‟raaf 7:17]
Shaytan always tries to drag us from the right path but have you thought about leading your prayers with an ultimate khushoo that can give you peace of mind? The importance of Khushoo is highlighted several times in Quran Kareem and hadiths. With the khushoo, a person is all focused with his heart and submissive to Allah when performing Salah.
It has been stated in Hadith that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
“Anyone performs ablution and performs the ablution perfectly and then offers two rak’ahs of prayers concentrating on them with his heart and face but paradise will necessarily fall to his lot.”
[Sunan Abi Dawud]
But it is a big question, how can you find khushoo and concentration in salah? Do you even get to the stage where you do not remember at what rakah are you on? Here are some tips stated to find khushoo in prayers and gain peace of mind with the remembrance of Allah.
Start Praying For Concentration
Lacking khushoo in the prayers is due to the deficiencies of our concentrations. Being a Muslim, we seek Allah’s help at first and this is what you have to understand while performing a prayer.
Make sure to perform salah to remove all the worldly distractions and the whisper of shaytan. Ask Allah from the depth of heart to grant you the best of ability to perform salah perfectly without any errors. Make dua to include you in the list of persons whose hearts are attached to their prayers.
Make your mind quiet before Salah
It happens most of the time that our minds get divert with the activities we were just performing before prayers. For instance, if you watched a movie before the time of salah then you might be indulged in replaying scenes from the movie. So when it is time for performing salah, take some time to quieten your mind. Make yourself disengage from such activities that could be a hurdle in attaining khushoo.
Learn and understand Arabic
The main reason one cannot find khushoo in the prayers is the lack of understating in the Arabic language. They don’t understand what they are reciting in Salah and they just keep going rakah after rakah. Indeed the motions of salah are embraced in it but the essence of Ayah is absent in the minds. Without an understanding of meaning, there is almost a great disconnect. So get towards learning of the Arabic and understand every verse of the Quran to have a more focused mind in the prayers.
Find a Quiet Place
Noise is recognized as the biggest factor of hindrance in our prayers. It pulls your mind towards all the unnecessary stuff other than the prayers. If you will be praying at a place with louder music or noises, it will keep distracting your mind at most.
So if you are looking to quieten your mind then first find a noise-free place. In a calm and quiet place, you will be able to concentrate on salah and its heart core essence.
Try to recite out loud
Most of the people recite like whispering and just perform it as a chore. It is recommended to recite out loud during salah. This loud recitation will concentrate your mind on what you are reading and make you more focused on salah.
Perform salah for peace of mind
Don’t see salah as a daily task only. Indeed it is a blessing for us to stand in front of Almighty, build a strong bond with Him and get towards peace. Prayer is a real-time when we discuss everything with our creator and no curtain is obstructed among us.
Remember that our lives are just so uncertain. Any prayer can be our last prayer of life. So would you not like to perform the prayer with utmost concentration? Obviously, the answer is yes!
Ad-Daylami narrated in Musnad al-Firdaws from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
“Remember death when you pray, for if a man remembers death when he prays, he will strive to make his prayer good. Pray the prayer of a man who does not think that he will ever pray another prayer, and beware of any matter that may require you to offer an apology.”
[Al-Maqaasid al-Hasanah, p. 226]
Our prayers are the first thing that will be questioned in our graves and on the day of judgment. So make sure to give your prayers core importance in life.
