status of parents in Islam

No matter what religion you are following, parents are blessings that are declared as an incomparable bounty of the world. Above all, Islam is the religion that greatly highlights the status of parents and their roles in our life. Since by our birth to our last breath, Islam tells us to be thankful and serve our parents well with all the aspects.

In this post, we are giving you the outlook of the significance that the Holy Qur’an and Hadiths are giving us for parents. Have a look here:

Status of the parents; What Quran says?

Allah (SWT) has ordered several times in the Quran to be kind and show gratitude to your parents even when you are angry or going through suffering. Throughout the Holy Quran, Allah(SWT) gives complete guidance on how to treat your parents well and find Jannah under their feet.

Sacrifices of Mother

And (God says:) “We have enjoined upon man goodness towards his parents: his mother bore him by bearing strain upon strain, and his utter dependence on her lasted two years: (hence, O man,) be grateful towards Me and towards thy parents, (and remember that) with Me is all journey’s end.

Surah Luqman 31: 14

Another verse highlighting the significance of parents is

And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and do good to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) “ugh” nor chide them, but (always) speak to them reverent speech.

Surah Al – Isra’, 17:23

Islam gives the higher ranks to parents and orders obedience to parents after Allah (SWT). One should not raise his voice higher in front of his parents. Moreover, he should be lowering his gaze and not walk ahead of them.

Dua for parents

The Holy Qur’an gives us comprehensive guidance as to how to pray for parents. These verses are really complete in all their essence.

Grant Thy forgiveness unto me, and my parents, and all the believers, on the Day on which the (last) reckoning will come to pass!”

Surah Ibrahim 14:41

And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: “O my Lord! have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) a child.”

Surah Al-Isra’, 17:24

These verses are recited as Salatul Walidain and this Salah is prayed for the well-being of parents in this world and the hereafter.

Status of parents in Islam in the light of Hadiths

Narrated Abu Umamah: A man said, “Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) what rights can parents demand from their children?” He replied, “They are your Paradise and your Hell.”
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Al-Tirmidhi – Hadith 1277

The hadiths highlight to serve the parents well with kindness as they are the reason for you to get a paradise or hell. Always show kindness and empathy to them no matter what the circumstances are.

Narrated Asma bint Abu Bakr: My mother came to me during the lifetime of Allah’s Apostle and she was a pagan. I said to Allah’s Apostle (seeking his verdict), “My mother has come to me and she desires to receive a reward from me, shall I keep good relations with her?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Yes, keep good relations with her.”
Sahih Al-Bukhari – Book 47 Hadith 789

Narrated Ibn Masud: A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) “What deeds are the best?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (1) To perform the (daily compulsory) prayers at their (early) stated fixed times, (2) To be good and dutiful to one’s own parents. (3) and to participate in Jihad in Allah’s Cause.”
Sahih Al-Bukhari – Book 93 Hadith 625

From several hadiths, it is clearly visible that one has to be dutiful to his parents throughout their lives. However, after their departure from the world, pray for forgiveness (maghfirat) for them.

In a few words, Islam is completely teaching us to ingrain kindness in our behaviors towards all, especially with parents. May Allah(SWT) guide us to act on the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and hadiths. Aameen!
